On May 8, three sources said that Tesla was under investigation by U.S. prosecutors and suspected of fraud in autonomous driving. Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems are not fully autonomous, and the U.S. Department of Justice is scrutinizing statements by the automaker and CEO Elon Musk suggesting the cars could drive themselves.
Investigators are looking into whether Tesla deceived investors and committed wire fraud or securities fraud, people familiar with the matter said.
