New lawsuit challenges legality of Trump reciprocal tariffs
Internet reported that a lawsuit filed on Monday questioned the legitimacy of U.S. President Trump's comprehensive tariff increase worldwide. The Liberty Justice Center, a liberal-leaning public interest law center based in Texas, filed the lawsuit with the U.S. Court of International Trade on Monday on behalf of five owner-run businesses allegedly damaged by the new tariffs. This is the most extensive legal action yet against Trump's scaled back tariffs. The lawsuit alleges that Trump improperly used a 1970s law, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, to implement most of his tariff regime and that the president was violating congressional power. The Liberty Justice Center is asking the court, which has national jurisdiction to hear cases involving international trade, to issue a broad order to block the across-the-board tariff increase based on IEEPA.
