The U.S. Marshals Service cannot confirm how much bitcoin it holds or affects the U.S. crypto reserve program

According to online reports, according to people familiar with the matter, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) cannot confirm the amount of bitcoins it currently holds, or even give a rough estimate. The management breach could affect White House crypto director David Sacks 'proposal for the U.S. government to build a crypto reserve plan, which could change the way the government handles seized crypto assets and may even involve purchasing cryptocurrencies. At present, USMS still relies on Excel records and manual operations, and management efficiency is limited. External experts warn that the agency may lose billions of dollars due to operational errors at any time. USMS began seeking cooperation from private companies as early as 2018, but the bidding process has been delayed for many years. After awarding relevant contracts to BitGo and Anchorage Digital in 2021, they were both cancelled because the company's size did not meet the 'small business' standard. In 2024, USMS realigned its strategy and awarded two new contracts to manage different categories of crypto assets.
