OpenAI will complete its first independently developed AI chip design this year and is expected to be mass produced next year

Online reports, Reuters reported that OpenAI is advancing plans to reduce dependence on Nvidia chip supply by independently developing the first generation of internal artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Sources said the ChatGPT developer will complete the design of its first internal chip in the next few months and plans to send it to TSMC for manufacturing. The latest news shows that OpenAI is expected to achieve its goal of mass production at TSMC in 2026. Typical streaming costs run into tens of millions of dollars and take approximately six months to produce finished chips unless OpenAI pays more to speed up manufacturing. Sources said that within OpenAI, this training-focused chip is seen as a strategic tool to strengthen OpenAI's bargaining leverage with other chip suppliers. After launching the first chip, OpenAI engineers plan to develop more advanced and powerful processors in each iteration. If the initial streaming goes well, the ChatGPT developer will be able to mass-produce its first internal AI chip and may test alternatives to Nvidia chips later this year.
