CBS: U.S. Treasury Secretary and Trump had a heated debate over tariff policy
According to online reports, Colombia Broadcasting Corporation (CBS) quoted multiple people familiar with the matter as saying that although the White House has been trying to claim that Trump administration officials have the same position on U.S. tariff policy, as early as Trump signed the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" executive order on April 2, internal differences on the policy have emerged: Senior Trump advisers have warned in private conversations that some tariff packages could have a devastating impact on global financial markets and send the U.S. economy into a downward spiral. CBS said U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant and Trump's senior trade and manufacturing adviser Peter Navarro had an argument in the office of White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles in late March. According to several people familiar with the matter, Navarro advocated a unified 25% comprehensive tariff on US$3 trillion in imported goods; while Besant, a former Wall Street investor, warned that the move would trigger market turmoil and outlined a variety of risk scenarios. The report said that fierce words continue to emerge.
