Trump again vows to block US Steel sale to Nippon Steel

Thomas Barwick President-elect Donald Trump reiterated that he would block Nippon Steel's (OTCPK:NPSCY) planned $14 billion acquisition of US Steel (NYSE:X) when he's president. \"I am totally against the once great and powerful U.S. Steel being bought by a foreign company, in this case Nippon Steel of Japan,\" Trump said in a posting on Truth Social on Monday night. \"Through a series of Tax Incentives and Tariffs, we will make U.S. Steel Strong and Great Again, and it will happen FAST! As President, I will block this deal from happening.\" Trump's post comes as the former president hasn't discussed his stance on the steel deal since before the election, with some investors believing that he might be willing to change his opposition to the transaction. Trump reiterated a few times earlier this year, including in late September, that he would stop the US Steel deal if it was his decision. Nippon Steel (OTCPK:NPSCY) Vice Chairman Takahiro Mori last month told the Washington Post that he believed there was a chance that Trump could approve the deal if Joe Biden were to block it. Last Tuesday, it was reported that Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba sent a letter to Biden asking him to approve the Nippon Steel's (OTCPK:NPSCY) deal to avoid marring recent efforts to strengthen ties between the countries. Nippon Steel (OTCPK:NPSCY) in September was allowed to withdrawal and refile its submission to CFIUS. The extension added three months and pushed the review past the U.S. election. The CFIUS decision is expected to be given to Biden this month unless it's further extended.
