U.S. Treasury Secretary Basent says taxing the rich is "anything possible"

Internet reports that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said the Republican Party is considering all options to fulfill the tax cuts promised President Trump during the campaign, including increasing taxes on the wealthy in the United States. "We will see where the president stands on this issue," Besent said in an interview Monday during a trip to Argentina. "Everything is on the table." Bessent said he and his colleagues in the administration and Congress are working on a "refined piece" of legislation that would extend and possibly expand Trump's 2017 tax cuts, many of which expire at the end of the year. "We have reached broad consensus and we will continue to move forward based on that," Bessent said. Reports emerged earlier this month that Republicans were considering creating a new tax bracket for people making $1 million or more. The deteriorating economic outlook is also putting more pressure on lawmakers to speed up tax negotiations.
