Indonesia to become first Southeast Asian member in accession talks with OECD
On February 20, Indonesia and the OECD began accession negotiations, or become the first Southeast Asian member。
On February 20, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced that it would start accession negotiations with Indonesia.。If the negotiations are successful, Indonesia will become the first Southeast Asian member of the OECD.。
According to OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann, Southeast Asia is one of the most dynamic regions in the world in terms of economic growth, and Indonesia's application to the OECD is the first in Southeast Asia, and the decision by both sides is historic.。
Cormann said in a statement: "As the largest economy in Southeast Asia and the third largest democracy in the world, Indonesia's accession to the OECD will not only enhance the country's economic status, but will also further strengthen the organization's global influence, killing two birds with one stone.。"
It is understood that the OECD currently has 38 member countries throughout Europe, North America and Oceania, of which Japan and South Korea are Asian members.。
Indonesia became a key partner of the OECD in 2007 and helped launch the organization's Southeast Asia project in 2014.。In July 2023, the country formally applied to join the organization。
It is reported that the negotiations are carried out after the OECD member countries in accordance with its "evidence-based future membership review framework" assessment; subsequently, the Secretary-General will prepare a draft road map for Indonesia's technical review process, more than 20 technical committees will also assess whether Indonesia meets the organizational standards, and will make recommendations for Indonesia's best integration with the organization。
The review includes areas such as open trade and investment, public governance, anti-corruption efforts and action on climate change, and the draft road map for accession will be submitted to the OECD Council for consideration at its next meeting.。
However, Indonesia is still some time away from formally acquiring membership, as there is no deadline for the completion of the accession process, which depends on when it will be able to adapt to OECD criteria.。However, the accession process must be finalized after all OECD countries have given their consent, and usually a country needs to wait 5-8 years for this.。
Indonesia aims to be among the world's largest economies by the centenary of its founding in 2045, and its application has been supported by member states such as the United Kingdom.。
A few days ago, Prabowo Subianto had just won the Indonesian election, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sent a congratulatory message saying that Britain wanted to see Indonesia take its place in the OECD.。
He said: "The UK and Indonesia work closely together in many areas and I support Indonesia's accession to the OECD and hope that the trade relationship between the two sides will continue to deepen.。"
