According to recent data released by the United Nations, China is far ahead of other countries in the number of GenAI patents, with patent applications more than six times that of the United States.

According to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of generative AI patent applications submitted in the past decade has exceeded 50,000, of which a quarter were submitted in 2023.

Between 2014 and 2023, China submitted over 38,000 generative AI patents, while the United States only submitted 6,276 patents during the same period. China has the highest number of patent applications globally, followed closely by South Korea, Japan, and India.

Christopher Harrison, WIPO Patent Analysis Manager, pointed out that China's patent applications cover a wide range of fields such as autonomous driving, publishing, and document management.

Among the top five companies and institutions in the world in terms of patent applications for generative artificial intelligence, only four are from China. The top five enterprises are Tencent of China (2,074 items), Ping An of China (1,564 items), Baidu of China (1,234 items), Chinese Academy of Sciences (607 items) and IBM of the United States (601 items).

WIPO expects a new wave of patent applications to be submitted soon and plans to release future data updates. Harrison emphasized, "This is a thriving field that is growing at an increasingly fast pace."
