Tesla warns of possible retaliatory tariff targets or raising costs for U.S. -made cars
Online reports, according to the Financial Times, Tesla (TSLA.O) warned that US President Trump's trade war could make it a target of retaliatory tariffs on the United States and increase the cost of manufacturing cars in the United States. In an unsigned letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer, Tesla said it "supports" fair trade but warned that "when other countries respond to U.S. trade actions, U.S. exporters will be disproportionately affected." "For example, past U.S. trade actions can lead to immediate responses from targeted countries, including increased tariffs on electric vehicles imported into these countries," the company wrote in a March 11 letter. The letter emphasized that even Tesla, led by Trump's close ally Musk, is concerned about the potential impact of broad tariffs.
