Bitrace: Mass freezes targeting OTC groups and crypto payment companies are expected in the next few months

On February 24, cryptographic data analysis company Bitrace issued a warning that after Bybit suffered a $1.5 billion hacker attack, a large-scale freeze against OTC groups and cryptographic payment companies will occur in the next few months. Bitrace research shows that in addition to using unlicensed industry infrastructure for fund laundering, the hacker organization also uses a large number of centralized platforms for dumping, which directly leads to the risk control of a large number of exchange user accounts that deliberately or unintentionally collect stolen money. The business addresses of OTC merchants and payment institutions were frozen by TEDA. After the Japanese DMM exchange was hacked in 2024, the attacker transferred US$600 million in funds to payment institution HuionePay, causing US$29 million in its hot wallet to be frozen. In 2023, Poloniex was attacked and lost more than US$100 million. Hackers washed funds through over-the-counter transactions, causing the business of a large number of OTC merchants to be blocked.
