U.S. tram trio: following Ford, GM joins Tesla's super charging network
On June 9, General Motors announced that it will follow in the footsteps of Ford, adopt Tesla's North American charging plug standard, and allow GM electric car buyers to use Tesla's super charging pile network。GM says it could save about $400 million from the deal。
On June 9, local time, General Motors announced that it will follow in the footsteps of Ford, adopt Tesla's North American charging plug standard, and allow GM electric car buyers to use Tesla's super charging pile network。
GM announced the partnership on Twitter, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk also retweeted it.。
Tesla's network of charging stations will be open to GM electric car drivers from 2024, but will initially require the use of adapters.。Starting in 2025, the first GM electric vehicles will be equipped with NACS entrances, which can be directly connected to Tesla's super charging piles without adapters。GM is also integrating the Tesla Fast Charge network into its vehicles and apps to help drivers quickly and easily find Tesla's super charging points available nearby, pay for them, and start charging。
Mary Barra, Chairman and CEO of General Motors, said: "Our vision for an all-electric future means producing millions of world-class electric vehicles in different categories and price points, while creating an ecosystem that accelerates the mass adoption of electric vehicles.。And said GM could save about $400 million from the deal.。Musk said: "I think this will fundamentally promote the development of electric vehicles。"
GM's move means that the three best-selling electric car manufacturers in North America have now agreed on charging hardware standards。
Not long ago, Ford, the second-largest U.S. automaker, also decided to adopt Tesla's charging plug standard。Ford's CEO Jim Farley had a similar discussion with Musk on Twitter two weeks ago and announced that he had reached an agreement with Tesla to allow its electric car owners to buy more than 1 in North America in early 2024..20,000 Tesla Super Charging Piles。
Public data shows that Tesla, General Motors and Ford currently account for about 70% of electric vehicle sales in the United States。Industry insiders believe that different electric vehicle charging connectors are a major obstacle to the large-scale spread of electric vehicles.。And as the nation's three largest electric car makers join forces, that will put pressure on other companies to abandon the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard and use Tesla's supercharging network.。
The CCS standard mentioned here is another electric vehicle charging standard promoted by the government。Companies that adopt the standard are eligible for billions of dollars in federal subsidies for new charging station construction on some 7,500 miles of the nation's busiest roads.。
At a time when most other automakers entrust charging piles to third parties, Tesla has invested heavily in deploying its super charging piles across North America。According to the U.S. Department of Energy, Tesla super charging stations account for about 60% of the total number of fast charging stations in the United States and Canada。In November 2021, Tesla announced the manufacturing specifications for its charging interface and encouraged other automakers to adopt it, calling it the "North American Charging Standard (NACS)."。Musk has always hoped that NACS can replace CCS as a national standard, and now Tesla has brought in Ford and GM, and the combined size of the three has basically declared NACS a victory.。
The alliance of the three automakers will put pressure on other automakers and independent charging network operators that have already adopted the CCS standard.。Shares of charging companies ChargePoint and eVgo both fell in after-hours trading after news of GM's partnership with Tesla was released。
David Whiston of Morningstar Research said: "This really increases the likelihood of NACS defeating CCS in North America.。He added that other charging providers could still use the CCS standard and rely on adapters to serve Tesla, Ford and General Motors.。
Earlier, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in May that the industry would eventually converge on a system, but that adapters would allow cross-use.。
Having said that, it also seems predictable that a snowball effect will emerge in the U.S.。Chris Harto, senior policy analyst at Consumer Reports, said: "I can see that this is a snowball effect, and more and more automakers will join in and move to Tesla's charging pile standard.。"
Musk said Tesla won't do anything to favor Tesla as more and more competing brands tap into the network of super charging piles。He said: "This will be a level playing field... The most important thing is that we move forward with the electric vehicle revolution.。"
However, for General Motors and Ford, the agreement to access the Tesla Super Charging Pile is more of a gamble。Admittedly, this could reduce the amount of money invested in charging piles, as Tesla currently has super charging piles all over the United States, so they don't have to contribute any more money.。But after letting their customers use Tesla's charging piles, the potential risk of customers turning to Tesla will rise。
However, for Tesla, this is undoubtedly a major positive。Can not help but admire Musk's layout on the super charging network, this example vividly illustrates what is called "first to eat meat, then drink soup"。
Stimulated by a number of recent positives, overnight U.S. stocks (June 8), Tesla closed up again, up nearly 5%, now at 234.86 USD。So far, Tesla's stock has risen for ten consecutive trading days, the longest consecutive rise since January 8, 2021, continuing to refresh the longest consecutive rise in 2021.。
It is worth noting that the current ten consecutive gains do not seem to be the limit for Tesla, as Tesla is up more than 5% again in after-hours trading.。It remains to be seen where Tesla's share price will rise this round.。
