The International Monetary Fund sees no reason for Namibia to issue retail CBDC"

Internet reports that the International Monetary Fund believes that Namibia has no convincing reason to issue a retail central bank digital currency (CBDC). Instead, the focus should be on strengthening instant payment solutions (IPS) to address affordability and interoperability issues. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) emphasized that Namibia's major financial institutions are already committed to Instant Payment Solutions (IPS), so there is little room for retail CBDC. In addition, the advantages of CBDC, such as offline capabilities, depend on technologies that are not yet ready for mass adoption. To truly eliminate the financial exclusion gap, Namibia must first address the root causes of insufficient infrastructure and low financial literacy penetration.
