Hargreaves Lansdown launches "Financial Intrepid" campaign
Hargreaves Lansdown has launched a new initiative called Financial Fearlessness on the occasion of International Women's Day, aiming to close the gender investment gap.。
InvestmentGenderHow big is the gap?
Men and women invest differently, with statistics showing that men are more likely to invest and when they have more money available to invest; women are generally paid less than men, and they often take time off to give birth or care for relatives, a so-called "good daughter penalty."。These social trends can create a huge wealth gap between men and women。
For example, according to the Now: Pensions study, women in the UK earn an average of £137,000 less when they retire than men.。Maike Currie, head of content at Hargreaves Lansdown, said of the gender investment gap:
The theme of this year's International Women's Day is "Embracing Equality," and it goes to the heart of what we strive to achieve.。Yes, women enjoy equality in legislation, but we still have a long way to go to achieve true equality。"
"In an industry, we need to work harder to get the opportunities and resources that fit the choices, circumstances and challenges women often face.。"
Investing in the gender gap is not only in pensions
Data from Hargreaves Lansdown shows that 62% of those who own stocks and share ISAs with brokers are men。However, research from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) shows that women are catching up, and nationally, 52% of all ISA holders in 2019 / 2020 were women.。
What's more, female customers of Hargreaves Lansdown may invest more in ISA than male customers。
Female investors are also more likely to adopt a long-term strategy, holding 75% of ISA assets in a fund rather than a single stock or other asset.。
The broker said that despite women's overall lower income, their savings ratio is higher than men's。Women are also more likely to save money for others before saving for themselves, which Hargreaves believes is similar to ignoring the instruction to "put on your own oxygen mask first" before helping others.。
