The AWS Regional Data Center in Malaysia will be operational in 2024, and the region will support the cloud computing and artificial intelligence needs of enterprises in Malaysia and the region.。Meanwhile, STT GDC partnered with Basis Bay to develop data centers in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberspace.。

Malaysia is currently one of the fastest growing data center markets in the Asia-Pacific region, with new data centers announced almost every month in 2023.。Some of the large data centers already operating in Malaysia are NTT Data Center, Bridge Data Center and Equinix。In addition to the well-known Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya, Johor is another popular location for data centers.。

AWS Regional Data Center

In 2022, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google and Telekom Malaysia received conditional licenses to build and operate hyperscale data centers and provide cloud services in Malaysia, and Chinese cloud service provider Alibaba has entered the Malaysian market.。

Today, AWS has reaffirmed its commitment to the Malaysian data center market by announcing that the new AWS Center will be operational in 2024.。AWS previously said it would invest RM25.5 billion to establish a new AWS region in Malaysia by 2037.。

The new AWS Region will significantly advance Malaysia's digitalization and play a key role in meeting the country's high demand for cloud services, while supporting innovation in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia.。The region will also allow customers with data residency preferences to securely store data in the country, achieve lower latency, and meet the demand for cloud services throughout Southeast Asia。

In addition to meeting the high demand for cloud services, the AWS Region Malaysia will support startups, SMEs, large enterprises and public sector organizations to collaborate, experiment and evolve with the latest technologies such as Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI), Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), etc.。

In Malaysia, AWS currently provides digital services to Alrajhi Bank, Islamic Bank, Malaysia Cancer Research Centre, Malaysia Post Office, Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (DPCCE), Statistics Malaysia, Maxis and Petronas.。

In September, Petronas, Gentari, Amazon and AWS announced they would work together to accelerate sustainability and decarbonization initiatives.。Petronas and AWS will combine cutting-edge technology, robotics and automation solutions (similar to Amazon warehouse technology) to design and build a state-of-the-art factory。Petronas will also continue to leverage AWS's high-end technologies to improve and expand existing and future solutions。

To ensure that the region has a sufficient workforce that meets the skills needs of the country, AWS has trained more than 50,000 cloud skilled personnel in Malaysia since 2017.。AWS also partnered with World Education Placement Services to provide free cloud skills development and vocational training through the AWS re / Start Program。

STT GDC cooperates with Basis Bay to enter the Malaysian market

Earlier this month, another data center was launched in Malaysia.。This time, STT Telecom Media (STT GDC) partnered with Basis Bay to develop, build and operate data center projects in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberspace.。

STT GDC, one of the world's fastest-growing data center providers, plans to build its first data center campus in Cyberspace。The new data center campus will develop two buildings on more than 3 acres, providing nearly 20 megawatts of IT load.。With the growing demand for digital infrastructure in Malaysia, the joint venture is also actively looking for new opportunities to further expand its presence in the country.。

The data center is called Cyberjaya DC..2, "composed of a four-level facility, designed as a highly secure, eco-green high-quality data center that meets global security and sustainability standards, which means that the data center takes into account the nuances of the surrounding environment。

The data center is expected to be operational by 2024 and will primarily serve local and international banks, financial institutions, government agencies and other similar key industries.。

At the same time, a second data center called "STT Kuala Lumpur 1" is expected to serve very large enterprises.。Construction of the first phase is expected to begin in the coming months, with completion in 2025.。

STT GDC already operates 85 data centers in 10 regions around the world.。The company brings in global expertise, international standards, best practices, advanced technologies and access to a wider market including hyperscale customers through its open platform。

STT GDC has expertise in operating data centers to the highest standards and is committed to building a global platform based on responsible, reliable and replicable processes, in line with Basis Bay's proven track record of operating locally。Lionel Yeo, CEO of STT GDC Southeast Asia, said: "This strategic joint venture will not only add another important market for our global data center platform, but will also strengthen our growing foothold in Southeast Asia and deepen our roots in this dynamic, high-growth region.。"

Basis Bay, a leading provider of sustainable cloud and green data centers, will ensure that these facilities have a deep understanding of local conditions and regulatory nuances.。Basis Bay currently provides colocation and data center management services through two data centers in Malaysia (located in GreenMary and Cypress) and has a history of more than 27 years. It is one of the first provider and operator neutral data center operators in Malaysia.。

"The partnership is strategically positioned to address the volume and scale needs of hyperscale enterprises, as well as the ultra-high availability needs of financial institutions, and will also emphasize emergency local participation and control to address data sovereignty issues."。Dato 'Praba Thiagarajah, Executive Chairman of Basis Bay, said: "Basis Bay has always provided quality cloud services and will continue to provide tailor-made data center services to various financial institutions.。"

In addition, Basis Bay is supported by Malaysia's Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), which aims to accelerate the development of the country's digital economy.。

Through this partnership, STT GDC will expand its footprint in Southeast Asia and strengthen its position as a leading provider of data center solutions in the region to meet the growing demand for reliable, resilient and responsible infrastructure to support digital transformation initiatives.。
