Qualcomm Expands PC Chip Portfolio with Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core Platform

At the 2024 International Consumer Electronics Show (IFA) in Berlin, Qualcomm (QCOM) released its new Snapdragon X Plus 8-core platform, further expanding the Snapdragon X series.

The platform targets the $700 to $900 PC market and aims to bring superior performance and AI experience to consumers and enterprises. Snapdragon X Plus is based on ARM architecture and features high performance and energy efficiency management, especially in terms of battery life and AI application performance.

Snapdragon X Plus is equipped with Qualcomm's Oryon 8-core CPU, which improves performance by 61% compared to similar products while significantly reducing power consumption. The platform's powerful GPU supports three external displays, delivering superior image processing capabilities to meet modern consumer demands for high performance and long-lasting battery life. In addition, Snapdragon X Plus also has excellent AI computing capabilities and achieves battery life of several days, positioning it as a mainstream AI PC device in the future.

Qualcomm CEO Mon pointed out that the PC market is undergoing fundamental changes in "the convergence of mobile devices and PCs" and "the convergence of AI and desktop computers." Qualcomm aims to extend AI technology to all personal computing devices, including small PCs, and plans to launch mini desktop computers. He emphasized that this will be an important step in Qualcomm's diversification strategy, especially in the automotive field and other markets, where AI will become the core of the company's strategy.

Qualcomm’s entry into the PC market coincides with the rise of AI technology. AI applications begin to run on the hardware side without relying on network transmission. Qualcomm has successfully transferred technology from the smartphone field to the PC market by virtue of its low-power AI technology advantages. The support of Microsoft (MSFT) further consolidates Qualcomm's position in the PC field. Microsoft's Copilot+ PC will use Snapdragon chips, enhancing Qualcomm's competitiveness in the market. At the same time, Intel (INTC) launched the Core Ultra series of AI chips, aiming to directly compete with Qualcomm.
