".vn" Domain Names‘ Expansion Boosts Vietnam Digitalization
After 30 years of development, Vietnam has registered more than 610,000 ".vn "domain names, and is expected to achieve comprehensive fiber-to-the-home in Vietnam by the end of 2025.
Currently, Vietnam has made significant progress on the path of digital transformation, and increasing domestic internet penetration is one of the strong initiatives to promote the digital economy.
To achieve this goal, the country has launched the ".vn" national domain and plans to achieve comprehensive fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) coverage by the end of 2025.
According to data disclosed by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), after 30 years of development, Vietnam has registered over 610,000 ".vn" domain names, ranking second in the ASEAN region, tenth in the Asia-Pacific region, and fortieth globally. However, at the national level, only 25% of Vietnamese enterprises register and use ".vn" domain names, far behind the 70% ratio in developed countries.
In response, Nguyen Huy Dung, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications of Vietnam (MIC), emphasized the importance of the Internet, believing its presence plays a crucial role in establishing brand effects and ensuring the sustainable development of online businesses for Vietnamese local enterprises and merchants. Furthermore, using ".vn" domain names also helps to maintain the country's digital sovereignty in cyberspace.
On this basis, in order to continue enhancing the country's digital transformation, establishing a digital government, and fostering the development of the digital economy and society, the Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam has introduced a new policy to promote the use of ".vn" domain names. This includes a two-year free usage right for "biz.vn" or "id.vn" domain names and basic digital services, as well as a simplified registration process through the tenmien.vn website.
Specifically, registration ".vn "domain name requires only four steps:
- Visit Tenmien.vn website;
- Search domain names and registration areas;
- Choose either "biz.vn" or "id.vn" domain name;
- Select the right registrar and provide certification information.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam has also engaged in nationwide fiber optic access efforts.
Statistics show that over 5.4 million households in Vietnam still lack access to broadband services, and 2,052 villages connected to the national grid lack broadband internet. In January of this year, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed and approved the "Vietnam 2021-2030 Digital Infrastructure Development Strategy", which aims to ensure that all Vietnamese households (approximately 27 million) have access to fiber optic services by the end of 2025.
By the end of 2024, it is projected that fiber optic services will expand to 684 electrified villages, with an additional 80 villages gaining broadband internet access. In 2025, fiber optic services will be extended to an additional 1,368 villages, providing 4G broadband coverage to an extra 150 villages.
The Ministry of Information and Communications' Authority of Telecommunications (AOT) in Vietnam has also called on enterprises to participate in the joint development and sharing of telecommunications infrastructure to ensure its coordinated development with other infrastructure such as transportation and electricity.
In addition to these measures, reports suggest that Vietnam is poised to roll out 5G services nationwide and plans to introduce 6G technology by 2028 or 2030, aiming to strengthen digital infrastructure continuously and become a global leader in 6G technology. To this end, Vietnam has established a dedicated 6G Steering Committee, attracting numerous leading telecommunications companies to participate.
Furthermore, Vietnam plans to support the country's and various financial centers' AI computing power needs through the establishment of three or more national-level multifunctional data center clusters and regional clusters.
With the widespread adoption of "vn." domains and fiber optic services, Vietnam remains a pioneer on the path of digital transformation.
