Online reported that on Friday local time, U.S. Special Prosecutor Jack Smith asked the federal judge in charge of the election interference case to cancel all upcoming court deadlines, thus taking a step towards dropping the case. Smith said he plans to submit a document on December 2 explaining how to handle the criminal case now that Trump is elected president. Smith's office said the case will be dropped because under Justice Department policy, the current president cannot be prosecuted. In Friday's filing, Smith said his office needed "time to assess this unprecedented situation and determine the appropriate route that is consistent with Justice Department policy." According to reports, Smith accused Trump of illegally trying to stay in office after losing to Biden in the 2020 election.
