Boston Fed: Trump trade tariffs may increase U.S. inflation by 0.8 percentage points
Internet reported that a report released by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston on Thursday showed that the sweeping tariffs sought by the Trump administration would put significant upward pressure on already high inflation. The Boston Fed reported that Trump will impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada and a 10% tariff on China, which will increase the increase in the personal consumption expenditure price index (PCE) by 0.8 percentage points, the Fed's preferred inflation indicator. Given that inflation is still above its 2% target, this level of upward pressure could cause trouble for the Fed. The Fed expects inflationary pressures to gradually ease, but tariffs will lead to higher U.S. consumer prices, which has great uncertainty about the impact on inflation data.
