An international cryptocurrency supplier was sentenced to 121 months in prison by the U.S. Department of Justice for conspiracy to launder money
Internet reports that according to a notice from the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove sentenced Indian national Anurag Pramod Murarka to 121 months in prison on charges of conspiracy to launder money. Murarka, 30, is an international virtual currency provider operating under two nicknames ("elonmuskwhm" and "la2nyc"). According to recently released court documents, Murarka operated an international money laundering business from April 2021 until September 29, 2023. Murarka often promotes his service online in the dark web market, calling it a money laundering service. Customers would then contact him via encrypted messages to respond to the ads and negotiate exchange rates. After the exchange rate was determined, Murarka, based in India, instructed its customers to send cryptocurrency to certain cryptocurrency addresses. Murarka then arranged for the delivery of cash to his employees in the United States through a complex, pre-arranged Indian hawala operation. Murarka's network of employees across the U.S. and overseas will collect cash from Murarka's hawala relationships, then package the cash in a variety of ways, including sandwiched between pages and sealed in multiple envelopes, before mailing the cash to customers. Murarka collects service fees and uses part of it to bribe employees and accomplices. Murarka knew that many of his clients were involved in criminal activities, particularly computer hacking and drug trafficking, so he knew that his business facilitated criminal activity by helping to conceal the sources of illegal activity. Murarka and his accomplices launder money totaling more than $20 million.
