UAW "strike wave" flocked to Volvo's Mack Trucks today and pressed the "pause button."

On the evening of October 8, local time, the United Auto Workers (UAW) said that unionized workers at Mack Trucks, a Volvo Group company, rejected the company's new agreement and will go on strike on Monday。

On the evening of October 8, local time, the United Auto Workers (UAW) said that unionized workers at Mack Trucks, a Volvo Group company, overwhelmingly rejected the company's offer of a five-year contract agreement and would go on strike on Monday.。

The five-year contract agreement, which involves 4,000 workers in Pennsylvania, Florida and Maryland, was voted against by about 73 percent of workers, the UAW said.。

The agreement offered by Mack Trucks includes a 19% raise, a $3,500 bonus, improved retirement benefits, additional vacation time for some employees, and a reduction in the time required to earn the highest salary.。

Nevertheless, the agreement was rejected。Shawn Fain, chairman of the UAW, said in a statement on Sunday evening: "I am encouraged to see the UAW members of Mack Trucks insist on a better deal and are ready to stand up and resign to win it.。"

It is reported that the union will start a strike on Monday local time。Mack Trucks will also follow in the footsteps of the "Detroit Three," with production pressing the "pause button."。

Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks, said in a statement that the company was "surprised and disappointed" that the UAW had chosen to strike, saying the move was unnecessary.。

Mack Trucks was acquired by Volvo in 2000 and is one of the largest manufacturers of medium and heavy trucks in North America.。Roy noted that Mack Trucks is the "only heavy-duty truck manufacturing group in the United States that assembles all trucks and engines."。

UAW says it will communicate with Mack Trucks and set date for resumption of talks。Mack Trucks also said the company is committed to the collective bargaining process and remains confident that an agreement can be reached.。

In a letter to Mack Trucks, the UAW said: "As you know, UAW members and workers across the economy are mobilizing to demand their fair share.。"The union remains committed to exploring all options for reaching a deal, but clearly we are not there yet."。"

Since September 15, the UAW has been staging targeted strikes at the plants of Detroit's Big Three automakers.。About 25,000 of the 146,000 UAW members at GM, Ford and Stellantis were affected by the strike.。

Now that Mack Trucks has joined the strike, there are inevitable fears that the scope and extent of the strike will increase further.。However, Fain said on Friday that the union will not extend the "Detroit Three" strike, because the current union and car companies have made progress in negotiations。

Ford is understood to have increased its proposed wage increase to 23% (by early 2028).。Combined with the proposed cost-of-living adjustment, workers' wages could increase by about 30 percent, according to people familiar with the matter.。

But it is not yet known whether the union will accept the new conditions.。This was because the union had previously demanded a total of 46 per cent pay increase in the new contract, including an immediate 20 per cent increase.。There are other conditions, including a defined benefit pension for all workers, a 32-hour work week and additional living expenses.。

It's important to note that the auto industry is not the only industry in the United States that has seen strikes recently.。

This year, in addition to the auto industry, the shipping and healthcare industries are also pushing for better welfare packages as they negotiate new contracts.。In the past 12 months, freight rail workers and employees of shipping giant FedEx (FedEx) have rejected a tentative agreement reached between union management and the company, but subsequent negotiations have led to another agreement。Last week, an impasse in negotiations between Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation's largest nonprofit hospital networks and managed care organization, and health care workers led to a three-day strike by health care workers at the facility.。Polls show that a majority of Americans generally support the union's demands.。
