Toyota Suspends Shipment of Various Models,Many Japanese Car Companies Accused of "Fake" Safety Testing

Toyota announced on Monday that it found insufficient data used in pedestrian and passenger protection tests, involving models such as the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross.

Due to incomplete adherence to government testing standards during certification applications, Toyota and two other car manufacturers have announced a suspension of shipments of multiple models in Japan. Toyota announced on Monday that it found insufficient data used in pedestrian and passenger protection tests, involving models such as the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross.

In January of this year, the Japanese Ministry of Transportation instructed domestic car manufacturers to investigate their vehicle certification process, as it was discovered that Toyota's small car unit, Daihatsu, had serious violations.

On Monday, Japan's Ministry of Transportation announced that five manufacturers, including Toyota, have not followed government standards and will conduct on-site inspections of these five companies.

Toyota also stated that there were errors in collision testing and other testing methods for four discontinued models. Nevertheless, these actions have shaken the foundation of the certification system, and as an automobile manufacturer, this is an unacceptable behavior. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda stated that the investigation is still ongoing and will explain to relevant authorities and accelerate appropriate measures, including conducting tests.

Other car factory issues

  • Yamaha: It was discovered that workers had changed the engine output of the motorcycle while preparing for muffler testing, and the shipment of this motorcycle has been suspended.
  • Honda and Suzuki have also reported inappropriate behavior on some discontinued models, but stated that these vehicles have no performance or safety issues while driving.
