Can't sell it anymore? Apple has suspended the development of the next generation of Vision Pro products

An employee of a manufacturer that produces key components for Vision Pro stated that Apple has informed at least one supplier that it has suspended the development of the next generation of high-end headwear devices.

According to media reports, Apple has suspended the development of the next generation of Vision Pro products due to a slowdown in sales of high-end head mounted devices.

According to the report, Apple originally planned to focus on reducing the cost of components for the first generation model and creating an upgraded display screen for the next generation model. But over the past year, Apple has gradually lowered the priority of developing the next generation of Vision Pro products and gradually reduced the number of employees involved in the project.

An employee of a manufacturer that produces key components for Vision Pro stated that Apple has informed at least one supplier that it has suspended the development of the next generation of high-end headwear devices.

The main reason for suspending research and development is that the sales of Vision Pro are slowing down.

According to a report by TF International Securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo in April, Apple initially expected sales of Vision Pro to reach 800,000 units in 2024. But Apple later adjusted its sales forecast, predicting that this year's Vision Pro sales (including international orders) will be between 400,000 and 450,000 units.

According to reports, a supplier producing key components for Vision Pro reduced production by 50% in May after receiving demand forecasts from Apple. The supplier stated that Apple currently has no plans to significantly increase production before August and predicts that the Vision Pro produced by Apple this year will not exceed 500,000 units.

Apple pauses development of Vision Pro's next generation

The report also mentioned that although Apple has suspended the development of the next generation of Vision Pro products, the company has not given up on developing a Vision product with fewer features and a more affordable price,

A former Apple employee stated that Apple initially planned to divide its Vision series into two models, the "Pro" model and the lower priced "standard" model, similar to the iPhone and iPhone Pro.

It is reported that Apple began developing a low-priced Vision device codenamed "N109" as early as 2022 and hopes to sell it at a price similar to that of a high-end iPhone (priced around $1,600).

When Apple began developing the N109, they had planned to release it by the end of 2024, but as of earlier this year, a prototype had not yet been made. According to insiders, Apple has been working hard to find ways to reduce the cost of this model without sacrificing too many features.

Apple hopes to retain the high-end display components of Vision Pro in low-priced models, which is one of the most expensive components in the device. Although the screens are the same, Apple may reduce costs by equipping fewer cameras, simpler headbands, and smaller speakers. Apple also hopes that the model can be at least one-third lighter than the Vision Pro.

The report also stated that Apple may still resume the development of the next generation Vision Pro at some point in the future.

From cutting off automotive projects to suspending the development of the next generation Vision Pro product, it can be seen that Apple has been striving to adjust its strategic layout and focus on AI related matters.

Earlier this month, Apple held its annual developer conference, unveiled its long-awaited artificial intelligence strategy, and announced a partnership with ChatGPT manufacturer OpenAI.

This press conference also boosted Apple's stock price. Earlier this year, Apple's stock price has been declining due to weak iPhone sales. After the press conference, Apple's stock price swept away its previous low state, showing a steady upward trend, and briefly regained the title of world market value first on June 14th. Since the beginning of this year, Apple's stock price has risen by nearly 12%.
