EU to launch antitrust probe into Google-Samsung tie-up

According to documents, EU antitrust investigators are questioning industry insiders about whether the multi-year AGI agreement between Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) and Samsung (KS: 005930) could hinder competitors from using chatbots on Samsung smartphones.

Last month, the European Commission announced it would further assess the impact of this agreement, where Samsung will embed Google's Gemini Nano in its Galaxy S24 series smartphones. If any anti-competitive behavior is found, EU antitrust regulators will promptly initiate proceedings against the relevant companies.

It is reported that regulators will inquire whether pre-installing Gemini Nano on devices or in the cloud limits the number of other generative AI systems that can be pre-installed on the same device, and whether pre-installing Gemini Nano impedes compatibility with other chatbots and pre-installed applications on Samsung phones.

Respondents were asked if they have attempted but failed to reach agreements with device manufacturers to pre-install their chatbots, and the reasons for any refusals.

Respondents are required to complete this extensive eight-page questionnaire within this week.
