Google Plans to Power AI Data Centers with Nuclear Energy
Google has signed an agreement with Kairos Power to use small nuclear reactors to provide large amounts of power to its artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
Google has signed a deal to use small nuclear reactors to provide large amounts of power to its artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
The company said the agreement with Kairos Power would allow it to start operating its first reactor in 2030 and put more reactors into service by 2035.
Last year, U.S. regulators issued Kairos Power its first license to build a new nuclear reactor in 50 years. In July, the company began building a demonstration reactor in Tennessee.Kairos Power is understood to specialize in developing small reactors that use molten fluoride salts as coolants instead of water used in traditional nuclear power plants.
Michael Terrell, senior director of energy and climate at Google, said: "This agreement helps accelerate the development of a new technology to cleanly and reliably meet energy needs and unleash the full potential of artificial intelligence for everyone.”
Kairos executive Jeff Olson said the deal with Google is "important in accelerating the commercialization of advanced nuclear energy because it demonstrates the technical and market feasibility of solutions critical to decarbonizing the grid."
The companies did not disclose any details about the value of the transaction or where the plants were built. The deal still requires approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local agencies to proceed.
As the technology industry consumes more energy while also trying to reduce carbon emissions, nuclear energy, which is low-carbon, environmentally friendly and can operate around the clock, has become increasingly attractive to the technology industry.
In addition to Google, other technology giants have also taken up the idea of nuclear energy. In March, Amazon said it would purchase a nuclear power data center from Talen Energy in Pennsylvania.Last month, Microsoft announced a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to purchase electricity from the improved Three-Miles Island nuclear power plant. In 1979, the nuclear power plant suffered the most serious nuclear leak accident in the history of the United States. It is understood that the nuclear power plant will be reopened in 2028 after improvements.
