On Friday, local time, carmaker Mercedes-Benz laid the groundwork for a sustainable battery recycling plant in Kupenheim, southern Germany. The recycled batteries will come from test vehicles and starting batteries.。Based on the success of the pilot, production may expand in the medium to long term。

It is reported that the pilot plant has an annual capacity of 2,500 tons and will produce more than 50,000 battery modules for Mercedes-Benz's new electric vehicles.。Commissioning of the first phase of the plant - mechanical dismantling - is scheduled to begin in December this year.。According to negotiations with the public sector, the pilot plant will be completed in a few months.。

The Kupenheim plant already has CO2-neutral operations with solar and green electricity。Its construction is part of a scientific research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection.。

Jörg Burzer, member of the Board of Directors of Mercedes-Benz Production and Supply Chain Management, said: "We are sending an important signal in Baden-Württemberg and Germany about the innovative strength of sustainable electric vehicles.。"。

Baden-Württemberg Minister of Environment, Climate and Energy Thekla Walker said she was pleased that Mercedes-Benz was promoting the topic of circular economy.。She said: "This is particularly important given the limited supply of important raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, which are in high demand.。"。
