Trump wins! U.S. court says it has no right to revoke presidential candidacy

On Monday (March 4) local time, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that states have no right to deny presidential candidacy because of a candidate's alleged involvement in an insurgency or uprising against the United States.。
The ruling reinstated former President Donald Trump's candidacy in Colorado and ended similar challenges to his candidacy in other states.。Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, the responsibility for enforcing such disqualifications rests with Congress, not the states.。
The ruling emphasizes that allowing states to judge the eligibility of presidential candidates on a case-by-case basis could lead to chaos in the national election。Although all nine justices agreed that Trump should appear on the ballot, four of them argued in separate opinions that the majority opinion went too far in limiting the way the rebellion clause was enforced.。Liberal members of the court have bluntly criticized the majority opinion for unnecessarily protecting Trump from future disputes.。
What is clear is that the ruling is a major victory for Trump.。Speaking at the Maalago resort, Trump said the decision was historic and would be talked about in the next 100 or even 200 years.。He believes voters have the ability to weed out candidates "very quickly," but state courts shouldn't, and the Supreme Court is quite right.。
The group challenging Trump's eligibility, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics Washington (CREW), said Trump won for technical reasons; CREW President Noah Bookbinder said it would be up to the American people to ensure accountability.。
The lawsuit, filed by a group of Republican and independent voters in Colorado, claims Trump was disqualified for inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.。Although the Colorado Supreme Court agreed to this in its decision last December, the Supreme Court reversed the Colorado court's ruling on Monday.。
The Supreme Court ruling did not judge whether Trump was involved in the rebellion, but focused on who had the authority to make the decision.。Chief Justice John Roberts and the other justices formed a majority in the unanimous opinion。
The court said that while states can disqualify individuals from statewide positions for acts of rebellion, it should be up to Congress to decide on the disqualification of presidential candidates.。
Although Trump faces multiple federal and state-level felony charges, he has not yet been convicted of a specific federal rebellion.。The special counsel charged him with multiple crimes, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and interfering with voter rights.。
It is not clear when or if the case will go to trial.。The Supreme Court is expected to rule by July on Trump's claim that he is immune from prosecution.。
