Amazon again violates labor law, CEO personally makes anti-union remarks?

Global e-commerce giant Amazon Inc. is understood to have once again violated federal labor laws.。

Prosecutors at the U.S. Labor Council (NLRB) have accused Amazon of unilaterally changing its policies and firing union supporters at its only union warehouse.。Notably, the complaint also alleges that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy personally made illegal anti-union remarks.。

Specifically, in a filing Monday local time, a regional director of the National Labor Relations Board wrote that Amazon illegally restricted employees from visiting its unionized New York City warehouses during furloughs to discourage them from engaging in labor activities.。

The commission claims that Amazon changed its policy regarding the entry of off-duty workers into the plant and the practice of declaring and offering paid leave for cases of the outbreak, but this series of policy changes did not negotiate with the union at the Staten Island plant.。The group also accused Amazon of firing two employees because of their involvement with the Amazon union.。Among other measures, Amazon should be forced to remove its off-duty visit policy for at least three years, the indictment said.。

The indictment also accuses Jassie of violating federal labor law by saying in a live interview during last November that union representation would reduce workers' power and make it harder for them to establish direct relationships with managers.。A month ago, the U.S. Labor Commission issued an advance complaint that similar remarks made by the CEO to multiple media outlets also violated the law.。

Federal labor laws allow companies to publicly oppose unionizing, but restrict companies from threatening or retaliating against unionizing workers and require them to negotiate working conditions if employees vote to unionize.。

While the U.S. Labor Commission has certified ALU, Amazon's first union in the U.S., as a representative of Staten Island workers, the Seattle-based company has argued that the union's landmark election victory last year should be overturned because of misconduct, and it has said it will pursue the action in federal court.。Amazon has repeatedly denied breaking the law.。

Complaints filed by labor board prosecutors are heard by agency judges, whose rulings can be appealed to labor board members in Washington and then to federal court.。The agency has the power to order employers to reinstate workers and change policies, but not to award them punitive damages or hold executives personally responsible for violations.。

According to the group's complaint on Monday, Jasi's remarks "interfered with, restrained and coerced employees to exercise their rights."。The ALU argued that the comments posed a threat that workers would cut ties with supervisors if they joined a union.。

Complaints from Labour Board officials who personally name prominent executives have been relatively rare.。Under the agency's current general counsel, Jennifer Abruzzo, the agency also sued in a case alleging that former Starbucks Corp. CEO Howard Schultz made anti-union threats at a meeting last year.。One pro-union staffer said Schultz asked them at the meeting, "If you hate Starbucks so much, why don't you go work elsewhere?"?Starbucks has denied wrongdoing.。

ALU attorney Seth Goldstein said on Monday: "All of these successor billionaires are to blame for their illegal actions, and that's what we're doing."。"。He said the complaint "will send a strong message to union busters and CEOs like Jassie who feel they can do whatever they want and will not be held accountable."。"
