On June 21st, Apple announced that it will not launch AI technologies such as Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring, and SharePlay Screen Sharing in Europe this year due to regulatory concerns over the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Apple stated in a statement, "We are concerned that the requirements for interoperability under the Digital Markets Act may force us to compromise product integrity in a way that undermines user privacy and data security."
DMA requires technology companies not to favor their own products, not to merge personal data from different services, not to use data collected from third parties to compete with competitors, and must allow users to download applications from competitor platforms.
On June 24th, the European Commission announced that it had informed Apple of its preliminary opinion that Apple's App Store rules violated DMA, and that Apple's App Store rules prevented app developers from freely guiding consumers to obtain products and content through other channels. Previously, Apple was fined 1.8 billion euros by the European Union for this.
In addition, the European Commission has launched a new investigation into Apple's violation procedures. The European Commission stated that the new investigation is due to concerns that Apple's new contract requirements for third-party app developers and app stores may not ensure effective compliance with DMA obligations.
