strong combination?Apple wants Google Gemini to provide AI support for iPhone

Apple is reportedly in talks with Google about building Google's Gemini AI engine into the iPhone.

On March 18th, it was reported by the media that Apple is in negotiations with Google regarding the integration of Google's Gemini artificial intelligence engine into the iPhone.

According to insiders, the discussion between Apple and Google revolves around authorizing Google's artificial intelligence technology to integrate it into future iOS updates. In addition, the company also discussed the possibility of using the GPT model with OpenAI.

For Apple, by partnering with Google, it is expected to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities and narrow the gap with its competitors such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, etc.

However, cooperation with external providers such as Google also indirectly reflects that Apple's progress in artificial intelligence may not have met its initial expectations. But time is not on Apple's side, so Apple has to catch up with the footsteps of artificial intelligence by collaborating with mature AI leaders.

Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook said during a earnings conference call, "We are delighted to be able to share the details of our ongoing artificial intelligence work later this year."

Cook's statement is consistent with Apple's recruitment actions over the past year. Last year, Apple released several job postings related to generative artificial intelligence work. The recruitment scope includes positions related to Siri Information Intelligence Department, App Store platform, and even Apple's retail department. A job posting for Apple's retail department mentions the development of a conversational artificial intelligence platform (voice and chat) to interact with customers.

Now, global fruit fans are waiting for the World Developers Conference (WWDC) to be held in June. It is expected that Apple will launch some of its own artificial intelligence features, and a series of important updates may be reflected in the iOS 18 upgrade.

Apple's attempt at artificial intelligence should have been on its voice assistant Siri at the earliest. In addition, there are reports that Apple is seeking to integrate artificial intelligence into as many applications as possible, including Apple Music, Keynote, Pages, and even AppleCare.

For Google, this move will further strengthen its dominant position on the iPhone, as the company has previously become the preferred search engine provider for Safari browser on the iPhone.

Moreover, Apple is not the first external phone manufacturer to introduce Gemini to provide AI support for its phones.

Earlier this year, Samsung announced a partnership with Google to introduce AI features supported by Gemini on its Galaxy S24 series phones.

It is reported that on the Galaxy S24 phone, Gemini will provide support for components such as Samsung Notes, recording software, and keyboard applications, providing "better summarization functionality.". For example, users will be able to use recording software to record lectures and obtain summaries of key parts of the course.

In addition to the Gemini, the Galaxy S24 will also benefit from Google's Imagen 2 text to image model, which will provide support for photo editing functionality on the phone. Officially, the model can automatically fill in partial content of the image based on the surrounding context.

Google has also launched similar features on its Pixel series smartphones. But it is currently unclear whether the collaboration between Apple and Google will bring more interesting AI features, let's wait and see.
