Global PC market growth, especially Apple and Acer
The latest figures released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) show that worldwide PC shipments reached 64.9 million units in the second quarter of 2024, an increase of 3 per cent year-on-year.
According to the latest data released by International Data Corporation (IDC), global PC shipments reached 64.9 million units in the second quarter of 2024, marking a 3% year-over-year increase. Excluding the Chinese market, global PC shipments saw a growth rate exceeding 5% annually.
This growth comes after seven consecutive quarters of decline in the PC market, with two consecutive quarters of growth in the first half of this year.
Among the standout performers, Apple and Acer demonstrated significant annual growth rates of 20.8% and 13.7% respectively.
Ryan Reith, Vice President of IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, noted, "The PC market, like other technology sectors, continues to face challenges from market maturity and macroeconomic conditions in the short term. However, two consecutive quarters of growth, along with the buzz around AI PCs and less prominent but critical commercial refresh cycles, indicate a recovery in PC demand. While artificial intelligence is a current hotspot, sales of non-AI PCs have also performed well, injecting optimism into this mature market."
Jitesh Ubrani, Research Manager for IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, added, "In addition to the PC refresh cycle, promotional activities by various PC brands over the past year have also driven PC sales. The market is gradually recovering from last year's price declines due to excess inventory, indicating that average selling prices will increase somewhat due to hardware upgrades and reduced discounts."
The data and analysis above indicate that while the global PC market faces multiple challenges, there are signs of recovery driven by market demand and technology refresh cycles, particularly in high-growth individual markets and product areas.
