Bitfinex hacker Ilya Lichtenstein was sentenced to 5 years in prison for laundering 120,000 bitcoins

Internet reports that Ilya Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison for participating in the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hacking incident and money laundering activities. The verdict was based on Lichtenstein's cooperation with the investigative authority, and the prosecution recommended a commutation of the sentence. Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan jointly planned money laundering, using encryption mixers, tiered transactions, dark networks and other means to clean approximately 120,000 stolen bitcoins. The value was once as high as US$72 million, but now it has reached US$10.7 billion. Lichtenstein and Morgan pleaded guilty in August 2023 to money laundering related offences. Morgan's sentence is set for November 18, and prosecutors have recommended an 18-month sentence.
