Meta to tighten security measures on platform ahead of European Parliament elections

Meta recently announced that in response to the upcoming European Parliament elections, the company has enhanced the security of its CrowdTangle anti information tool to alleviate EU concerns.

Meta recently announced that in response to the upcoming European Parliament elections, the company has enhanced the security of its CrowdTangle anti information tool to alleviate EU concerns. Last month, the European Union launched an investigation into Meta's plan to gradually phase out CrowdTangle products.

Last week, American social media giant Meta announced that it will send messages to candidates at the top of Facebook and Instagram pages during next month's elections, reminding them how to protect themselves and their accounts.

This security measure includes guiding users on how to set up dual authentication, checking security settings, and enabling Instagram's "hidden word" feature. This feature can automatically send private message requests containing offensive words, phrases, and emoticons to hidden folders.

Meta has over 250 million monthly active users in the European Union. In order to further ensure election transparency, Meta announced last Monday that it will launch real-time displays for each EU country, categorized by relevant keywords, public groups, and Instagram accounts, to facilitate real-time monitoring of election dynamics by researchers, journalists, and civil society.

Through these measures, Meta hopes to provide users with a safer social media experience during the upcoming European Parliament elections and respond to the EU's demands for information transparency and security.

Meta's initiative has been appreciated by the European Commission.

The European Commission stated in a statement that "the Commission will oversee the effective implementation of these functions and will continue to collaborate with Meta to find more permanent solutions to address all concerns raised in the preliminary decision." The statement stated that formal procedures for Meta remain open.
