Trump TikTok Fans Over 3 Million
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced he was joining TikTok over the weekend, and in just a few days, his account has already attracted more than 3 million followers.
Trump's first short video posted on TikTok is a 13-second clip seemingly taken at a Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event in New Jersey. In the opening frame of the video, UFC President Dana White and Trump stand together, with White saying, "The president is now on TikTok." Trump responds, "It's my honor."
Just weeks before Trump joined TikTok, a Super PAC (Political Action Committee) affiliated with him, "MAGA," also joined the popular social media platform.
Trump's move to join TikTok sharply contrasts with his stance from his tenure just a few years ago. Back then, he signed an executive order banning TikTok in the U.S., which was later suspended by the courts. In the executive order signed in 2020, Trump argued that the U.S. must take proactive measures to protect national security.
However, in March of this year, Trump reversed his position, publicly opposing a TikTok ban, claiming such a ban would benefit competitors like Facebook.
In April of this year, current U.S. President Joe Biden signed a bill, including a provision requiring TikTok's parent company to sell the TikTok app within nine months, or else the app would be banned from being sold in American app stores. Trump criticized Biden's action, claiming Biden needed to take responsibility for the TikTok ban, letting everyone know that "phony" Joe Biden is responsible for banning TikTok.
Both Trump and Biden have shown contradictory behavior. While Biden is working to ban TikTok, his campaign team is posting content on TikTok to aid his presidential campaign, and they may continue to do so, as any potential TikTok ban would only take effect after the election.
Media commentators have described Biden's actions as hypocritical, implying that he and his team understand the power and necessity of TikTok.
According to internal analysis reports from TikTok, posts supporting Trump on the app have been nearly twice as much as those supporting Biden since November of last year, prior to Trump joining TikTok.
