Recently, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi expressed three major concerns about Tesla's upcoming Robotaxi plan. Although Tesla CEO Elon Musk has high hopes for this project and even predicts that car owners can earn up to $30,000 extra per year through the platform, Dara Khosrowshahi is reserved about this.
First, Khosrowshahi questioned how many Tesla owners would be willing to rent their beloved vehicles to strangers. He believes that this may affect the smooth implementation of Tesla's Robotaxi plan.
Second, he pointed out that car owners' car usage time often overlaps with peak traffic hours, which may cause an imbalance between supply and demand, and thus affect the overall efficiency of the service.
In addition, Khosrowshahi emphasized that Tesla may have underestimated the complexity of the customer service industry, especially in dealing with passenger emergencies, cash payments, lost luggage and handling traffic accidents.
Despite questioning Tesla's Robotaxi plan, Khosrowshahi does not believe that there is a zero-sum competition between Uber and Tesla. He suggested that in the future, the automotive industry may develop a partnership similar to that between fast food chains and delivery platforms, where both parties can work together in their respective areas of expertise to improve overall efficiency.
Khosrowshahi suggested that instead of building a ride-hailing service on its own, Tesla should consider working with a company like Uber that already has a mature platform. After 15 years of development and tens of billions of dollars in investment, Uber has established a complete system that can immediately provide support to partners. He hopes that Tesla can become one of the partners to jointly explore new development opportunities in the field of self-driving cars.
