Uber and Tesla cooperate: drivers can get cash rewards for buying Model 3 / Y

On January 16th, Uber announced that it is collaborating with Tesla and will offer up to $2000 in rewards to drivers who purchase Tesla Model 3 or Model Y.

On January 16th, Uber announced that it is collaborating with Tesla to encourage its drivers to switch to electric vehicles.

It is understood that this collaboration between Uber and Tesla is mainly reflected in two aspects:

● Share data. Uber has started sharing data on most of its driver's travel locations with Tesla, with the first city to share data being New York. This will help showcase the charging infrastructure in the city to drivers and avoid electric vehicles getting into charging anxiety. In addition, Uber emphasized that this data will be aggregated and anonymized to avoid leaking the addresses of individual drivers.

● Purchase rewards. Uber stated that it will offer up to $2000 in rewards to drivers who purchase Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. Drivers can purchase vehicles directly from Tesla factories or available inventory using recommended codes. However, there are also limitations to this reward, which means that drivers need to purchase and receive the vehicle before March 31st, and complete 100 trips before May 15th to qualify for this reward.

Currently, Uber has launched a test drive activity in Tesla stores, and drivers in need can experience the driving experience of electric vehicles in advance.

Starting from the above two measures, Andrew Macdonald, Senior Vice President of Mobile and Business Operations at Uber, said, "We learned from the voices of Uber drivers that cost of ownership and convenient charging are the two major obstacles to their electrification. We are pleased to work with Tesla to address these two issues."

Actually, since 2020, Uber has taken various incentive measures to increase the proportion of electric vehicles used in the fleet.

For example, Uber drivers can get electric car rental discounts at the American car rental company Hertz, and if they drive an electric car, they can earn more income each time they ride.

According to Uber's data, as of the third quarter of last year, Uber had an average of about 74000 electric vehicle drivers per month in the United States, Canada, and Europe, almost double the same period last year. Electric vehicle drivers on Uber have provided over 38 million emissions free trips in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Europe, which is close to twice the same period last year.

But currently, there is still a gap between the above achievements and the company's zero emission target. As of the third quarter of 2023, electric vehicle travel accounted for only 6.5% of Uber's total travel in the United States and Canada, while in Europe it accounted for 9.6%.

For this reason, Uber has decided to increase incentive measures, and this collaboration with Tesla is part of the company's incentive measures.

According to Uber's goal, by 2025, hundreds of thousands of drivers will switch to electric vehicles through its Green Future plan, with 50% of the mileage in major European cities being driven by electric vehicles. By 2030, Uber will operate as a zero emission mobile platform in cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe. By 2040, 100% of Uber's global transportation and delivery will be conducted through zero emission vehicles, micro transportation, or public transportation.
