Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers (UAW), has issued a "letter of war" to Detroit's three auto giants, including a 46 percent raise, a return to traditional pensions and a 32-hour work week.。If the UAW fails to reach an agreement with Stellantis, the parent company of GM, Ford and Chrysler, by the September 14 deadline, the UAW could organize simultaneous strikes by employees of the three car companies。And automakers believe that if these union requirements are met, business survival will be in question, labor costs will increase by $80 billion, and total compensation and benefits spending will equal more than $150 an hour, up from $64 today.。The Big Three automakers are spending more than $100 billion in total to transition to electric vehicles, and they claim to be unable to sign generous labor contracts with the UAW
