Musk is angry with Apple: shouldn't work with OpenAI, will sell user data
The tech giant Apple announced a cooperation with OpenAI, and undoubtedly stepped on Musk's "minefield."
On June 11, just after Apple concluded its WWDC24 conference, Elon Musk criticized the company. The reason was Apple's announcement of future cooperation with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones and other devices.
This decision greatly displeased Musk, the founder of OpenAI and a well-known entrepreneur, who has a long-standing feud with the company. He posted multiple articles on the X platform, accusing Apple of "not being smart enough to create its own AI" and warning users that "OpenAI will sell your data." He also threatened that "if Apple introduces ChatGPT into its OS, my company will ban the use of Apple devices."
The feud between Musk and OpenAI dates back to early 2018. At that time, Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI, told Altman that the company was seriously lagging behind Google. To reverse the situation, Musk suggested that he should control and personally manage OpenAI. However, this proposal was opposed by Altman and other founders of OpenAI, leading to Musk's departure from the company in a fit of anger.
In 2023, after seeing OpenAI turn to major company Microsoft and deviate from its original mission, Musk first publicly called for a pause in researching AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. Later, he simply founded his own AI company, xAI, with the goal of "understanding the true nature of the universe," indirectly distinguishing itself from OpenAI's now profit-driven nature.
By March 2024, the conflict between Musk and OpenAI had reached a critical point. Musk formally sued OpenAI, demanding that OpenAI return to an open-source state and prohibiting Altman and Microsoft from profiting from AI technology. Musk believed that Altman and others had abandoned the founding mission of "developing AI for the benefit of humanity" and intentionally turned the NGO into a profit-oriented organization.
The recent announcement of a partnership between tech giant Apple and OpenAI undoubtedly hit Musk's "hot button."
After posting multiple angry messages on X against OpenAI, Musk's "antics" did not stop: he first photoshopped an image mocking "OpenAI indirectly siphoning user data through Apple's iPhone."
He then retweeted a post from a netizen claiming that Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson had told OpenAI not to use her voice, but they still highly mimicked and used it. "Now imagine what they could do with your phone data even if you don't allow them to use it," Musk replied, "Exactly!" He also called OpenAI creepy spyware.
Despite this, Musk's unilateral "venting" did not seem to affect the other two players. After the collaboration was announced, a cheerful Altman posted on the X platform: "Very excited to partner with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into their devices later this year! I think you'll love it."
Apple stated that future devices will be deeply integrated with ChatGPT, allowing free users to use GPT-4o without creating an account, and paid OpenAI users can link their accounts to use paid features. Apple also mentioned that more AI models will be introduced in the future.
