Google Gemini Landed on Chromebook Plus
Google's Chromebook Plus laptop series based on ChromeOS system will have built-in Gemini AI assistant, officially "declared war" on Microsoft and Apple in the field of AIPC.
On May 28, Google announced the integration of its own Gemini AI assistant into the Chromebook Plus series of laptops based on the ChromeOS system, directly competing with companies like Microsoft and Apple in the AIPC (AI Personal Computer) field.
Last October, Google launched Chromebook Plus as an upgraded version of its Chromebook series, featuring enhanced hardware to support AI functions. With this update, Google is fully integrating its most powerful Gemini model into the ChromeOS operating system, making AI capabilities smoother, faster, and more powerful.
Help Me Write
For text assistance, the "Help Me Write" function allows Chromebook Plus users to rewrite text across the entire system. By selecting a text area on websites, PDFs, or the Web applications, and right-clicking, users can receive AI-generated writing or rewriting suggestions. This function supports creating content from scratch as well as refining existing text with more concise or formal language.
Magic Editor
For photo editing, the Magic Editor, previously exclusive to Google Pixel phones, is now available to Chromebook Plus users. This function enables users to identify and adjust the objects they want to edit by circling them in the editor and placing them in the scene for recognition.
Users can click and drag to reposition objects, resize images, and receive lighting and background editing suggestions from the built-in AI assistant, making photo optimization more intelligent.
The Magic Eraser can remove unwanted elements, eliminating them or moving them to other parts of the image and filling in the modified background seamlessly.
Additionally, the updated Chromebook Plus includes AI-generated call backgrounds, desktop wallpapers, and other functions that allow users to express creativity and add a personal touch to enterprise devices. Pre-built instructions generate the desired results to match user needs.
Gemini Chat
Google's chatbot, Gemini Chat, will also be directly accessible on the Chromebook Plus desktop. Users can click the "blue star" icon on the navigation bar to launch the chat interface.
In the future, users will be able to upload documents to Gemini, which will automatically summarize them and provide a Q&A format to help users quickly understand the text. Windows, apps, and reading articles left open on phones will also continue running when the laptop is opened.
Others
Chromebook Plus offers users a variety of practical additional features.
- Simplified laptop setup process: Android phone users can share WiFi network and Google account information by scanning a QR code on the screen, transferring data to the Chromebook Plus.
- Built-in Google Task View: Users can check off tasks directly from the date on the bottom right of the main screen and add, modify, or verify tasks across devices.
- Built-in screenshot tool: Automatically saves screen recordings as GIFs for instant explanations or technical support, and users can also create fun memes.
- Game dashboard updates: Players can control the device with facial and head movements while simultaneously recording gameplay and camera footage.
John Solomon, Vice President of Google's ChromeOS laptop operating system, stated that Google believes AI can revolutionize computing devices. With Chromebook Plus priced much lower than Microsoft and Apple AIPCs, it offers a more cost-effective AI option for the average consumer, covering the mass market.
The specific models will include current offerings from ASUS and HP, as well as new products from Acer. The new Chromebook Plus models are priced between $299 and $699, with new users receiving a 12-month free trial of the Google One AI advanced plan (valued at $240), which includes Gemini Advanced (Gemini 1.5 Pro), 2TB of cloud storage, and access to Gemini integration with Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail. After the trial period, the Google One AI advanced plan will cost $19.99 per month.
