Analyst: US customs failure may be a "strategic smoke bomb"

According to online reports, institutional analysts said that the U.S. customs failure may be much more than a software failure. The so-called "failure" rhetoric may be a strategic smoke bomb, not intended to fix a malfunctioning system, but to buy time during a period of major adjustments when global trade and capital flows are at high risk. As Trump's heavy-handed tariff measures shook global supply chains, a sudden "glitch" caused a suspension of tariff data processing, which gave key stakeholders-clearing houses, freight forwarding companies, the U.S. Treasury Department and Customs an opportunity to pause and re-process pricing and layout before any new tax rates are implemented. It could also be a form of information interference similar to the wartime brief fog strategy. By freezing the tracking of tariff exemptions and reducing transparency about who is exempt and who is not, this provides the U.S. executive branch and the Treasury with some relatively quiet time (hours or days) to assess market reactions and intervene if necessary without headlines exposing their actions. Think of it as a pre-emptive firewall against liquidity crises or geopolitical panic, rather than a system-level failure.
